Dive into the captivating world of MNHM's 'Coastal Explorations' summer children's program!

The Marion Natural History Museum’s Coastal Explorations Summer Programs are one of the most well known and well regarded in the South Coast area. Children from across the country visit us each summer and participate in the programs.

Coastal Explorations runs for one week from 9AM to 12PM each day. Session One will run July 8th-12th. Session Two will run August 6th-10th. Our programs are designed for small groups, and registration is limited.|

What's in store:
During our half-day programs, we will explore some of Marion’s unique natural areas including our rocky intertidal shoreline, salt marshes, and estuaries as well as freshwater riverbanks, forest, swamps, ponds, and bogs. We will take trips to look for the birds, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates that make these areas so special.

Each morning will involve hands-on exploration, experiments, crafts, and journaling while being outdoors. Your child will enjoy being a Coastal Explorer with the Marion Natural History Museum!

Space is limited so make sure to register early.
Perfect for children entering grades 3-6.

Coastal Explorations July 2024

During our one weeklong half day Summer 2024 program (July 8 – 12) the Museum is offering a half-day summer program to explore some of Marion’s unique natural areas. Saltmarsh and rocky shore ecology walk

July 9 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

We’ll be meeting at Planting Island beach to explore these two very different ecosystems. We’ll be looking for different varieties of salt marsh grass learning about and the crab and animal species that rely on this calmer side of the shore. We’ll also be walking the rocky shore to look at what animals are able to survive on the more energetic side of this barrier beach. Grades entering 2-6.

Amphibians at Washburn

July 10 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

July 10 – Amphibians | Grades entering 2 – 6 Frogs, salamanders, and newts, oh my! What makes these animals so special? We’ll be taking a close look at amphibians and aquatic invertebrates in the wetlands at Washburn Park. We’ll be netting vernal pools and ponds, looking under logs, and exploring the woods looking for our resident species. Location may have to be switched to the museum due to inclement weather.
