
In this class we will explore color theory, the color wheel, making color swatches, color mixing,
color matching, and all about complementary colors, primary, secondary and
tertiary colors. This class will also touch on values, hues, shades, tones and
tints, gray scale and warm and cool colors and the differences between all of
these.
Materials needed:
(All materials can be found at your local craft and/or art supply store)
– Watercolor paints (recommended is the Prang Brand watercolor kit with 16
colors.) Set should have at least cool and warm of each primary color (Red,
Blue, Yellow) as well as Black and White. We can make all the colors we need
from these few colors.
– Number 4 & 6 round watercolor brushes (size of brushes)
– Two water containers (two clean pasta sauce jars work well or two clean 8 oz.
plastic containers)
– Paper Towels or an old cloth dish towel that absorbs well
– Watercolor paper (recommended is Canson Cold Press Watercolor paper, or
for better paper choose 100% cotton Arches cold press but more expensive
than Canson)
– Pencil (Number 2 or HB is fine)
– Pencil Sharpener
– 12-inch ruler
– Small desk light (battery powered is best)
Handouts will be provided
Also, please bring something colorful from nature that you can color match.
Flowers, fruit, vegetables, seed pods, shells, etc..
