Krill Carson, from New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA), will be joined by others to share what’s been happening with our local Diamondback Terrapin population.
Krill Carson is a marine biologist, who has worked within New England for over forty years. Since 2016, she also oversees the Southcoast Terrapin Project, which aims to both study and protect diamondback terrapins and their hatchlings. SLT Board member Deb Ewing is a trained volunteer with the project, with experience helping diamondback terrapins in her own neighborhood.
From the NECWA website: “The Diamondback Terrapin is the only brackish-water turtle that lives in the coastal marshes of New England and is listed as a threatened species in Massachusetts. In the past, this medium-sized turtle was abundant in many of our coastal marshes and waterways. Terrapin populations now face many threats to their continued survival, including the loss of salt marsh habitat and suitable nesting sites due to rising sea level, coastal flooding and increased erosion.”
Come hear the latest about these important (and equally adorable!) creatures from Krill and Deb, and learn more about the Southcoast Terrapin Project!
This event is co-sponsored by the Marion Natural History Museum and welcomes both MNHM and SLT members.
