Explore the Mysteries of the Ocean Twilight Zone with Dr. Benjamin Grassian of WHOI
Join us for an illuminating presentation by Dr. Benjamin Grassian, a Postdoctoral Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who brings fresh insights from the depths of the ocean twilight zone. Dr. Grassian will talk about Diel Vertical Migration (DVM)—the daily vertical movements of diverse marine animals in response to light and predation risks, the largest migration of animals on Earth. His work, part of the Ocean Twilight Zone Project, uses cutting-edge imaging, acoustic, and net data, including high-resolution zooplankton images collected from the “Stingray” towed instrument
Dr. Grassian’s studies reveal the hidden distribution and identities of zooplankton and fish in the open ocean. Their movements play a critical role in ocean ecosystems, influencing the food web, nutrient transport, and the global carbon cycle. As climate change reshapes marine environments, his work helps scientists predict how these shifts may impact the delicate balance of life in the oceans.
